I really enjoy seeing athletes go to the next level in their sports, either from high school to college or college to the pros. At the Commodore Invitational Indoor Track Meet that concluded today, I got to see three area athletes that I had covered in high school that are now competing at the next level in college.
Lydia Witty, a freshman from Harpeth Hall now runs for Vanderbilt, Janel Pate, a freshman from Hillsboro, now runs for the University of Alabama, and Barbara Lee Ball, a sophomore, is running for Lipscomb University after prepping at Lipscomb Academy. All were multiple TSSAA state champions in their various events. Witty ran the 400 and 800 in high school and runs the 400 now at Vanderbilt. Pate ran the 100, 200, and 400 at Hillsboro and ran in the 4 x 400 relay at the Commodore Invitational. Barbara Lee Ball excels at distance races.
The leap in talent from high school to college is drastic, as Lydia Witty told me – “It’s like night and day”.
Barbara Lee Ball seems to have made the leap well as she won the 3000 meter run (9:46.13) against a strong field.
