The Nashville Predators fell behind 4-1 to the NHL’s top team, the Washington Capitals, but they came back within a goal 4-3 with 8:00 minutes remaining, only
to finally fall 5-3.
The Capitals, led by former Predators coach Barry Trotz, scored the 1st periods only goal with a score by Jason Chimera.
Tom Wilson put the Caps up 2-0 4:55 into the 2nd, but the Predators’ Filip Forsberg cut the lead in half with a power play goal at the 14:42 mark to make it 2-1 Caps after 2.
The Caps opened things up in the 3rd, going up 4-1 after goals by Justin Williams and Marcus Johansson. But the Predators came storming back with goals by Roman Josi and Forsberg’s 2nd tally of the game, making it 4-3 with 8:00 still remaining.
The Predators were poised for the final push, but a questionable tripping penalty on Mattias Ekholm on superstar Alex Ovechkin kept Predators goalie Pekka Rinne in the net until very late, and then Ovechkin found the empty net for the 5-3 final.
