l Update on the Commodores: Vanderbilt will be looking to set the tone for a productive outdoor season at this weekend’s Black and Gold Invitational, which represents the team’s only outdoor home meet. Vanderbilt closed out a highly-successful indoor season two weeks ago at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where Simone Charley, the Commodores’ All-American triple jumper, took second place — and broke her with own school record — with a mark of 44-0 (13.41m). Charley, who was competing in front of her hometown fans in Birmingham, Ala., earned First Team Indoor All-American honors for the second consecutive year, and her performance represented the best by a Commodore since Ryan Tolbert captured a national championship in the 400 hurdles in 1997.

l Saluting the seniors: The Commodores will host their Senior Day festivities on Saturday, and will recognize eight individuals from the track and field and cross country teams. The Senior Day ceremony is slated for 11:40 a.m. on Saturday. Scheduled to be honored are: Sara Barron, Skyler Carpenter, Katherine Delaney, Vanessa Valentine, Faith Washington, Lily Williams, Nick French and Sam Reilly. … Barron is tentatively scheduled to sing the National Anthem.

l Looking at the field: The field for this weekend’s meet will have plenty of variety, in terms of both size and location. Overall, 25 schools will be represented, with 24 women’s teams and 19 men’s team scheduled to compete. Here’s a look at the field: Arkansas State (F/M), Austin Peay (F/M), Belmont (F/M), Butler (F/M), Dayton (F), DePaul (F/M), Illinois (F), IUPUI (F), Lipscomb (F/M), Loyola (Ill.) (F/M),Memphis (F/M), Miami-Ohio (F/M), Mid. Tenn. State (M), Murray State (F), Northern Kentucky (F/M), Oakland (F/M), Tennessee St. (F/M), Tennessee Tech (F/M), Tennessee-Martin (F/M), Trevecca Nazarene (F/M), UAB (F), UT-Chattanooga (F/M), Vanderbilt (F/M), Wayne St. (F/M), and Western Kentucky (F/M).

l Looking back to last year: The Commodores produced a series of impressive results at last year’s Black and Gold meet. Among the highlights was the performance of senior Rebecca Chandler, who celebrated her final home appearance by winning the 200-meter Steeplechase with a time of 7:04.56. Sara Barron captured first place in the 3,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 9:34.68, which ranked as the No. 2 mark on Vanderbilt’s all-time performance list, and Skyler Carpenter delivered a dominating performance in the 400-meter hurdles, posting a first-place time of 59.21. The Commodores also had a big performance in the 4×100 relay, where the foursome of Janetra Gleaves, Faith Washington, Emma Radan and Erin Edmond posted a third-place time of 46.95, which ranked as the fifth-best mark on VU’s all-time list.
