While many of us are focused on the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Ensworth High School’s Tyra Gittens has been busy in the AAU Junior Olympics going on in Houston, TX. Gittens, a rising senior at Ensworth High School and competing for Precision Track Club of Nashville, won the 17-18 year old outdoor heptathlon, and in the process, set an AAU Olympic record with 5337 points.

In a phone interview from Texas Gittens told me, “I’m so excited. I didn’t know about the record. I just wanted to run a good 800, and I did. I didn’t start well on Day 1 with the hurdles and 200, but the high jump was great and I finished strong in the 800.”

Gittens leaped a personal best 1.85 meters in the high jump. That’s 6’1″ to you and me. She also set a PR with a javelin throw of 32.28 meters. (105-11 feet).
