Was it good defense or poor shooting? Either way Belmont shot 1 of 18 from 3 in the 1st half and 9 of 41 in the game for 22% as Vanderbilt got Bryce Drew his 1st win as Vanderbilt’s new head basketball coach beating the Bruins 80-66 at Memorial Gym.
The Commodores were led by Luke Kornet with 20 points, Matthew Fisher-Daveis with 16, Jeff Roberson with 10, and Payton Willis off the bench netted 10 as well.
Belmont was paced by Evan Bradds with 19 points and Amanze Egekeze with 18.
Vanderbilt opened up a 16 point lead with a 3-pointer by Nolan Cressler with 1:41 left in the first half and led 36-21 at the break.
Belmont got things going in the 2nd half and got within 4 points when Egekeze hit a 3 to make it 62-58 with 6:50 left in the game.
But a 4-point play by Fisher-Davis on Vanderbilt’s next possession put the Commodores up 66-58 and they never looked back opening up the lead to the final of 80-66.
Vanderbilt improves to 1-1 on the season while Belmont falls to 0-1.
