Maplewood Wins, While Whites Creek Loses at Buzzer

The Maplewood Panthers will play Knoxville Catholic Saturday at 3:30 for the TSSAA DI-AA State Basketball Championship after prevailing 57-56 over Haywood Friday afternoon at MTSU. After being fouled on a hard drive to the basket, Hassan Littlepage knocked down the first free throw with 2.0 seconds left to break a 56-56 tie. Littepage missed his second free throw attempt, but Haywood’s prayer of a shot wasn’t answered and the Panthers celebrated and looked forward to their first state championship game.

2-Time Mr. Basketball Bo Hodges led the Panthers with 26 points,  Robert Wilcox III netted 11, and Littlepage added 9 for the Panthers.

Earlier, in the other DI-AA Semi Final game, Whites Creek lost a 56-53 heart-breaker to Knoxville Catholic when Catholic’s Luke Smith hit a 3-pointer from just over half-court as time expired. The loss ended the Cobras title run and eliminated an ALL-Metro Nashville AA final game.

Dennis Stallings led the Cobras with 17 points and Ruot Monyyong added 11.
