Tyra Gittens, Ensworth High School’s Senior superstar, begins her drive for five more TSSAA state track and field titles Monday when the pentathlon begins at 9:30 AM on the track at MTSU. Gittens already claims 12 individual state championships, and she could get five more this week at the TSSAA Spring Fling. The pentathlon is Monday, and the girls’ field event and track finals will be on Thursday. Gittens will compete in the long jump, high jump, the 100 hurdles, and the 200-meter dash. She has the top qualifying marks in all of those events.
Last year, at the TSSAA meet, Gittens, as a junior, became the first athlete to ever win all five events at the TSSAA meet for the 2nd year in a row. She also claimed the pentathlon and high jump titles as a freshman for a total of 12 titles. The 12 titles tie her with former Anderson County athlete Josie Hahn, who won 12 medals from 1998-2001.
Gittens, a Texas A&M commitment, also has the National AAU Heptathlon record for 17-18 year olds.
