Nashville, Tn – Is it always a good feeling when you make a choice that turns out as expected, but the game I chose to attend last night went way beyond my expectations. I thought it would be a good game between CPA and Pearl-Cohn, but it was perhaps the best game I have seen during the regular season in my 20+ years of high school football. It was full of big scores and hard hits from both teams, and it took overtime to settle things.
Both teams made great plays all night long, each getting ahead by more than 2 TD’s only to see the other team come back. The CPA Lions took a 28-17 lead into the locker room at halftime, but the Pearl-Cohn Firebirds came out smoking in the 3rd qtr, scoring 26 straight points to take a 43-28 lead into the 4th qtr. The Lions of CPA refused to be tamed, however, and after the two teams traded 4th qtr possessions, they came roaring back to make it 43-35 with 3:26 remaining. Another stop gave the Lions another shot, and they tied the game late in the 4th to force overtime.
Pearl-Cohn won the extra-time coin toss and wisely chose to go on defense first. The Firebirds defense held CPA to a field goal, setting the stage for their dramatic victory. After a run for no gain from the 10-yard line on 1st down, Xavier Shepherd found Jay Parker in the left corner of the end zone for the game-winning TD, setting off a delirious celebration by the Firebirds.
It was an epic ballgame between two great teams, whom I expect will make deep runs in the TSSAA playoffs. Wow!
